Using a tiny needle, blood is drawn from the patient and spun in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the healing cells (platelets, growth factors, and stem cells). The concentrated platelets can then be:

1. Applied topically to the surface of the skin during microneedling and/or lasers to decrease downtime and improve skin quality.

2. Injected directly into the skin to help treat scarring, skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation irregularities.

3. Mixed with your own fat for facial volume replacement and acne scar treatments.

Platelets are involved in the clotting and wound-healing process, making them especially effective following surgical procedures. Dr. Karolak often pairs PRP treatments after facelift or neck lift procedures to decrease downtime and minimize any potential scarring.

How Long Does a PRP Take?

PRP treatments don’t often add much time to your original procedure. The harvesting process takes just a few short minutes, and the platelets are separated in the lab while your procedure is being done. PRP can be applied topically or reinjected into problem areas. In most cases, you can expect PRP treatments to take an additional 20-30 minutes. Dr. Karolak performs all PRP procedures to ensure an optimal outcome.

What Results Will I See After PRP?

Results from PRP for aesthetic applications are typically gradual and progressive. PRP naturally stimulates your body’s own collagen production over the course of 1-3 months. Patients can see long-lasting results from PRP for upwards of 6+ months. In many cases for patients with scars from acne or trauma, the areas can be visibly improved indefinitely.

Is There Any Downtime with PRP?

On its own, PRP treatment actually helps to decrease downtime. The amount of recovery you incur solely depends on the treatment PRP is paired with. For example, PRP for acne may not have any downtime at all while PRP after a surgical procedure may require 1-2 weeks of recovery. Dr. Karolak will discuss every aspect of your upcoming procedure and customize a recovery plan at the time of your initial consultation.
